GrC 439: Book Design Technology
This past fall, I took an intensive Book Design course, where I took one of my favorite books, Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata, and completely transformed the book from inside and out. I reformatted the complete manuscript in Adobe Indesign, developing a refined typographic system, grid, and chapter openers supported by my own illustrations. I ensured the file was print-ready, managing styles, photos, and long-document workflows. Beyond the inside design of the book, I was in charge of the physical production of the book. I chose Neenah Classic Crest Eggshell 80#. and imposed the pages on Prinergy, then printed the pages on a Konica Minolta Accurio Press C12000. I sewed the signatures by hand, assembled and trimmed the book boards, and constructed the hardcover binding. I selected the end sheets and lastly cased in the book. I added in headbands and foil embellishments to the cover. This project greatly strengthened my typography, design, and print production skills.
